Free DICOM Viewer is a medical program made to help you store, save and view DICOM images. This is the standard in the medical field and it's essential that a doctor's office or any other medical office have a DICOM viewer to see radiology imaging. While limited in some regards, this is a suitable program that some medical offices will love using.

Primary Features

Free DICOM Viewer's main feature is that it gives you access to the DICOM network. A DICOM image initially might seem like any other image file, like a JPG or PNG, but medical staff can instantly see the difference. DICOM files are highly detailed and medically accurate. That's why they require a specific program for viewing these images.

Not only that, but DICOM is also made for uniformity and mobility. As long as an office has a DICOM viewer, they can send, share and view any of these images. While the features of each program may differ, any viewer will give you access to these images.

Image Manipulation

DICOM viewers aren't like graphic design programs, so you can't completely manipulate the image, but there are features that will enhance or change certain sections. Free DICOM Viewer allows you to change the color of certain areas so that they stand out and are easier to view.

You can also tag specific areas, which is essential if you note something abnormal or don't want to forget your thoughts on the image. There are also features for changing the lighting and reset the image to its default values. There aren't a massive number of tools for changing the image, but there are enough to make this a useful program.

Limitations

Most DICOM viewers are paid programs, so you should expect some limitations with this program. The biggest limitation is that you cannot generate your own images. If you have your own radiology and imaging equipment, then this can be a major issue. At the same time, not all medical offices do their own imaging. This can be manageable if you only need to view the images.

The settings and tools are also simplistic compared to premium programs. This may also not work with all versions of Windows. Be sure to test the program before trying to use it with your patients.

Transfer and Send

While you cannot make your own images, this program makes it easy to transfer images into the program or send them to other offices. Any medical office knows that referrals are essential to ensure clients keep coming in. You'll often have to send images to other doctors and have images sent to you as well.

This program makes the process very simple. Within a few mouse clicks the images will be sent or entered into the program.
